Environmental Monitoring,
Training & Guidelines
Professionalism and ethical behaviour is a core principle of the company. This is reflected throughout all our activities.
NZTA Erosion & Sediment Control Guideline
Working collaboratively with Aquaterra International and RidleyDunphy Environmental, SouthernSkies has developed the Draft Erosion and Sediment Control Standard for State Highway Infrastructure on behalf of the New Zealand Transport Agency.
This document represents a synthesis of best practice erosion and sediment control design and implementation practices from New Zealand and overseas.
It will allow the New Zealand Transport Agency to establish a best practice standard across all construction activities, meeting local and site-specific requirements. Over recent years SouthernSkies has prepared guidelines, fact sheets and educational material for a range of clients including the Auckland Regional Council and the Ministry for the Environment.
Millwater Residential Development
The Millwater development Silverdale comprises the development of 300 hectares to create 3000 new homes, 50 hectares of business and commercial activities, schooling, open space network and community recreational facilities.
The development lies within the catchment of the Orewa Estuary. SouthernSkies now undertakes environmental monitoring on behalf of the developer (WFH Properties), as required by the environmental monitoring plan and consent conditions.
The focus of our services is to monitor the discharge of treated sediment laden water from the chemically flocculated sediment retention ponds, through a mix of on-site inspections, automated sampling and telemetry.

Environmental Training
SouthernSkies offers a range of training courses on erosion and sediment control for contractors, site managers and regulators. We also provide training on preparing resource consent applications and assessments of environmental effects, and compliance with consent conditions, aimed at consent applicants and utility operators.
Examples of training courses we have recently run are our collaboration with the Civil Contractors Federation (Queensland) and O2 in delivering two day training courses throughout southern Queensland, flocculation training for Environment Waikato and Erosion and Sediment Control training for Northland Regional Council.
